How to Add an AI Chatbot to Your Website
Installing a chatbot is the easy part. A useful launch depends on preparing the right knowledge, deciding what the assistant should do and testing real customer questions before people rely on it.
1. Define the first outcome
Choose one primary outcome for the first release: answer routine support questions, qualify service enquiries, recommend products or collect booking details. This determines the greeting, suggested prompts and what information the assistant should ask for. A generic “How can I help?” is fine, but a short set of relevant options gives visitors a faster start.
2. Prepare clean, current sources
Use your current website pages, documents, policies and product information. Remove outdated PDFs, duplicated pages and material that should not be customer-facing. Add a short document for answers that need exact wording: price boundaries, service areas, escalation instructions, legal language and contact routes. The assistant can only be as dependable as the material you give it.
3. Configure the widget and the guardrails
- Match the widget to your site so it feels intentional rather than bolted on.
- Set a voice that reflects your brand and a clear instruction not to guess.
- Specify questions that should always be handed to a person.
- Decide where contact details and transcripts should go.
- Place chat on the pages where a visitor needs help making a decision.
4. Test before publishing
Ask the chatbot questions copied from real emails, calls and sales conversations. Include vague questions, unusual wording and questions it should decline. Test the mobile experience as well as desktop, because many high-intent visitors arrive from a phone. When an answer is weak, improve the source or instruction rather than trying to hide the problem.
5. Review and improve weekly
After launch, look for unanswered questions, poor handoffs and recurring queries. Each one is either an opportunity to improve the chatbot or a signal that your website needs clearer information. This review loop is what turns a one-time embed into a better customer experience.
